Research Question: How can we develop an automated real-time testing system for embedded control systems using commercially available off-the-shelf hardware and software?

Methodology: The researchers used the Vali/Test Pro testing methodology to structure the testing for a Personnel Safety System (PSS) with large quantities of requirements and test cases. They decomposed the system requirement documents into high, intermediate, and detail level requirements, and validation procedures into testing units called builds, test runs, and test cases. A validation matrix was designed to handle over 150 test cases and requirements, measuring the PSS system's test coverage.

Results: The researchers developed an Automated Real-Time Test System (ARTTS) capable of performing complete black-box testing in real-time for Embedded PLC Based Control Systems. They successfully tested the PSS system, which is responsible for personnel safety in potentially hazardous areas.

Implications: This research demonstrates that it is possible to develop an automated real-time testing system for embedded control systems using commercially available off-the-shelf hardware and software. This approach can save time and resources, making testing more accessible and efficient for similar systems.
