Title: POLLINATED HCI-SE CURRICULUM Research Question: How can we improve the integration between software engineering (SE) and usability engineering (UE) in the development of interactive systems? Methodology: The researchers analyzed current approaches to teaching SE and UE, identified barriers and issues in developing systems with substantial interactive components, and proposed a comprehensive computing curriculum integrating SE, UE, and system architectures in a project environment. Results: The researchers found that the lack of an integrated process model to provide a development infrastructure in which the UE and SE life cycles co-exist complementarily is a significant barrier. They proposed four major themes of learning for a cross-pollinated computing curriculum, including understanding the importance of communication, collaboration, and coordination between SE and UE, and addressing the unique challenges of developing interactive systems. Implications: The proposed curriculum aims to fill the gap between the SE and UE disciplines, leading to more effective and user-friendly software systems. By teaching students about the existence and barriers involved in coordinating these two processes, the curriculum can help to improve the overall design and development of interactive systems.
