Title: TUAP056: Upgrading the Spring-8 Beamline Network with VLAN Technology Abstract: The Spring-8 beamline network is an essential part of the high-brilliance X-ray source. To accommodate the increasing network traffic and number of beamlines, the backbone of the BL-USER-LAN was upgraded from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet. Additionally, the IEEE802.1Q Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology was introduced to establish independence for each beamline and increase flexibility. This upgrade allowed for better network security and performance, enabling users to transmit larger amounts of data and connect more computers to the network. Research Question: How can we improve the network infrastructure of the Spring-8 beamline to accommodate increasing traffic and user needs? Methodology: The researchers upgraded the backbone of the BL-USER-LAN from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet to provide higher bandwidth and faster data transfer. They also introduced the IEEE802.1Q VLAN technology to create separate broadcast domains for each beamline, ensuring independence and flexibility. This allowed for better network security and performance. Results: The upgrade resulted in a significant increase in network performance, with a throughput of 170Mbps measured for the firewalls. Users were able to transmit larger amounts of data, such as 100Gbyte/day or more, from their experimental systems on the BL-USER-LAN to their home institutes. The VLAN technology successfully created separate broadcast domains for each beamline, providing independence and flexibility. Implications: The implementation of Gigabit Ethernet and VLAN technology improved the Spring-8 beamline network infrastructure, enabling better network security, performance, and user experience. This upgrade serves as a model for other similar networks and demonstrates the benefits of investing in high-performance network infrastructure.
