Automated Real-Time Testing for Embedded Control Systems
Title: Automated Real-Time Testing for Embedded Control Systems
Research Question: How can we develop an automated real-time testing system for embedded control systems using off-the-shelf hardware and software?
Methodology: The researchers used the Vali/Test Pro testing methodology to structure the testing for a personnel safety system with large quantities of requirements and test cases. They decomposed the system requirement documents into high, intermediate, and detail level requirements, and then mapped these levels to their respective unit level of test using a specially constructed validation matrix. This allowed them to measure the test coverage and develop an Automated Real-Time Test System (ARTTS) capable of performing complete black-box testing in real-time for Embedded PLC Based Control Systems.
Results: The ARTTS system was successfully developed and demonstrated its ability to perform complete black-box testing in real-time for Embedded PLC Based Control Systems. The system was designed to test a Personnel Safety System (PSS) located at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.
Implications: This research provides a cost-effective and time-saving solution for developing automated real-time testing systems for embedded control systems. By using commercially available off-the-shelf hardware and software, engineers and scientists can now create scalable test platforms that are capable of performing comprehensive testing for their systems. This can lead to improved system reliability and safety, as well as reduced development costs and time.
