Title: Automated Real-Time Testing for Embedded Control Systems

Research Question: How can we develop an automated real-time testing system for embedded control systems using off-the-shelf hardware and software?

Methodology: The researchers used the Vali/Test Pro testing methodology to structure the testing for a personnel safety system with large quantities of requirements and test cases. They decomposed the system requirement documents into high, intermediate, and detail level requirements, and then mapped these levels to their respective unit level of test using a specially constructed validation matrix. This matrix was designed to handle over 150 test cases and requirements.

Results: They developed an Automated Real-Time Test System (ARTTS) that is capable of performing complete black box testing in real-time for Embedded PLC Based Control Systems. The system was designed to test a Personnel Safety System (PSS) located at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.

Implications: This research provides a cost-effective and time-saving solution for developing automated real-time testing systems for embedded control systems. By using off-the-shelf hardware and software, engineers and scientists can avoid the customized software and hardware that can be expensive and time consuming to develop. The ARTTS system can be scaled to test a variety of systems, making it a versatile tool for the testing industry.
