Title: Design of a Community-based Translation Center

Research Question: How can a community-based translation center be designed to effectively translate an interface for a digital library, while maintaining quality and usability?

Methodology: The researchers discussed three approaches to translation: automated translation, developer-based translation, and community-based translation. They evaluated these approaches based on factors such as quality of resulting translation, industry-specific terms, style of resulting translation, party in control, time required, user reviewing, dispute resolution, and flexibility and layout of the interface. They concluded that a community-based translation center could be an effective solution.

Results: The researchers proposed a design for an online community translation center where volunteers help translate interface components and educational materials available in CITIDEL, a digital library for computing education materials.

Implications: This design allows for the expansion of the user population of a web-based system, increases the number of users and resources, and ensures the maintenance of quality translations and usability. It also promotes collaboration within the community and encourages users to contribute to the translation process.
